Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Patek Philippe Calatrava for a while now. Specifically, the 6119G-001 model. It’s a real beauty, but the price tag? Ouch. Plus, I heard the waiting list for these things is crazy, like a year or something! For a Nautilus, it could even be up to 8 years, but that’s another story. Anyway, I decided to take matters into my own hands and see if I could remake one myself. I mean, how hard could it be, right?
First, I spent hours, and I mean HOURS, looking at pictures of the 6119G-001 online. I found some sites, and they’re selling the real deal for, like, over $30,000! Crazy, huh? I needed to get a good feel for the design, the details, you know? This watch has a really cool “Clous de Paris” bezel, and the hands are super sleek. It doesn’t look too fancy, making it perfect for daily wear. It’s different from the older 5196 model, and honestly, a bit bolder, which I like.
Then came the fun part – gathering the materials. I found some decent watch parts online, but finding something that matched that special bezel was tough. I did manage to find some pretty similar-looking three-dimensional hands, though. I also grabbed a basic watch movement, some tools, and a whole lot of other little bits and pieces.
Putting it all together was a whole other story.
- I started by taking apart a cheap watch I had lying around, just to get a feel for how everything fits together. That was a bit of a disaster, to be honest. Springs flying everywhere, tiny screws rolling off the table… you get the picture.
- Next, I tried to get that “Clous de Paris” look on a plain bezel. Let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it looks. I experimented with a few different tools and techniques, but nothing really worked out. I ended up with something that looked kind of okay, but definitely not Patek Philippe quality.
- The hands were another challenge. I managed to attach them to the movement, but they were a bit wobbly and didn’t quite line up perfectly. It took a lot of fiddling and a few choice words, but I eventually got them in place.
After many, many hours of work, I finally had something that resembled a watch. Did it look like a Patek Philippe 6119G-001? Well, not exactly. But it did tell the time, which is something, right? It’s much bigger than I thought it would be, too, coming in at around 39 mm. That’s pretty modern, I guess.
The Final Result
Honestly, the whole process was way harder than I expected. It gave me a whole new appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into these luxury watches. My little homemade version is far from perfect, but I learned a lot, and it was a fun project. Plus, I saved myself a ton of money! And hey, I’ve got a unique watch that no one else has. Maybe I’ll start a waiting list of my own!
