Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get into this whole “remaking designer bags” thing for a while, and I finally took the plunge with the YSL June Box Bag. I mean, who doesn’t love a good YSL? But let’s be real, those price tags are insane. So I thought, why not try to make one myself? I’m not a professional or anything, just a guy who likes to get his hands dirty with some DIY projects.
First off, I spent a good chunk of time just staring at pictures of the June Box Bag online. I checked out all the angles, the stitching, that iconic YSL logo, and tried to figure out how the whole thing was put together. It’s got this cool diamond-quilted stitching and a flap with a pivoting Cassandre closure. Fancy, right?
Next, I had to get my hands on some materials. I figured calfskin leather was the way to go since that’s what the original uses. Finding decent leather wasn’t too hard. I picked a black one, ’cause that’s the classic YSL look. I managed to get it from a local shop. And the tools, man, I had to get a few new ones for leatherwork. Needles, thread, a cutting mat, a rotary cutter, some edge paint… you name it.
Then came the hard part – actually making the bag. I started by cutting out the leather pieces. I found a pattern online, which was a lifesaver. If you’re thinking of doing this, definitely get a pattern. Trust me. I used the pattern, traced it onto the leather, and started cutting. It was slow going, but I wanted to make sure I got it right.
- Cutting the leather: This was nerve-wracking. One wrong cut and you’ve messed up a whole piece. I used a rotary cutter, which made things a bit easier, and a metal ruler to keep the lines straight.
- Stitching: The diamond quilting was a pain, I won’t lie. But it’s such a key part of the design, I had to do it. I practiced on some scrap leather first to get the hang of it. It’s all about keeping the stitches even and the tension right.
- The logo: This was the trickiest part. I tried to mimic the pivoting Cassandre closure. The original bag has a metallic logo, but I found a similar one in an old bag, and I tried to attach it to the flap. It’s not perfect, but it gives a similar vibe, I guess.
- Assembly: Putting it all together was like solving a puzzle. I had to figure out which piece went where, how to attach the flap, and how to make sure everything lined up.
After a lot of trial and error, I finally had something that resembled the YSL June Box Bag. It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty proud of it. I mean, I made it myself! I learned so much during this project. Leatherwork is definitely not as easy as it looks, but it’s super rewarding.
So, if you’re thinking of trying to remake a designer bag, I say go for it. Just be prepared to put in the time and effort. And don’t be afraid to make mistakes – that’s how you learn. Who knows, maybe I’ll try another bag next. Any suggestions?
